The statics for abuse with someone with a disability in the US is around 90% according the Center for Disability Rights. The link to their blog post is here. These numbers do not surprise me anymore especially with my own experience with my brother, working with individuals post trauma (go back to the blog post on abuse in the educational system), and what I have witness with my own 2 eyes. This has to stop.
This is why I am done with trauma informed. If you work in the developmental disability space, we are trauma assumed. This is why I teach Trauma, Sensory Processing, and Limited Language. This is geared toward occupational therapists and yoga therapists but I would invite direct care staff and anyone working in this field. (For more information, please see Yoga For All Abilities Website for the next training). We spend quite a bit of time discussing our own reactions so we can see them in other people especially those that do not use verbal language.
There is still one easy solution to this problem- inclusion. This way people with disabilities are just a normal part of the human experience because it is.

Such an essential topic ….
