I am not sure that any where in the world has healthcare figured out. As for the US, the capitalistic system is failing most of us. Even more so if you have a government insurance policy. I turn people away daily because they can’t afford to privately pay for services and make too much money for government services.
I stumbled across this podcast. This is an MD that works with the ID population (intellectual disabilities). There was a line he said to all the health professionals “you have to learn to listen differently when someone can’t tell you what’s wrong”. Preach my friend. I have been saying this for years.
I have to remember that not everyone has a life time of experience working with this population. I went off on a nurse that could not be bothered with an individual with CP. He really wasn’t that hard to understand. He just wanted his basic needs met and morning routine completed. I do know she went on to become a nurse practitioner and hope she learned something that day. Then there was the attending who documented that an individual had Down syndrome when he was autistic. And I can’t count the times that intellectual disability is not listed in a chart. Owe.
This is a plea to the medical community- do better!
